The Complete Guide to Mushroom Shelves

Fungi are the forest's recyclers. Oyster mushrooms stack up the sides of fallen trees, and bracket fungi jut out of trunks like little benches. They turn dead wood back into soil. Nature, in other words, has been building shelves for a very long time. We just copied the design.

Our mushroom shelves are the most popular thing we make, and also the thing we get the most questions about. Here's everything in one place.

The shapes

Oyster mushroom sets are the originals and our bestsellers. You get three fan-shaped shelves at varying heights, each 3.75" across and about 1.5" deep, made for crystals, tiny figurines and small treasures. Read their story.

Polypore sets are modeled on bracket fungi, the woody kind that grows straight out of trunks. They're the same size, with a different silhouette. More on polypores.

Large shelves are 8" across and about 4.5" deep, with room for a candle, a small plant or a basking reptile. They come as a single shelf or as a corner set of two. See the big oyster.

Flush clusters are a single sculpture of overlapping oyster caps that sits flat against the wall. They're mainly decorative, with a small ledge on top. They come in 8" × 5" and a large 8" × 8". Meet the cluster.

Chicken of the woods is our newest design: a hand-painted orange-and-yellow shelf 6.75" across, big enough for a votive or a succulent. Meet it.

Glow-in-the-dark sets are orange by day. Charge them with sunlight or a UV light and they glow at night. How the glow works.

The colors

We print in gold, classic white, soft pink, black, blue, purple, translucent red and orange, black fuchsia and blends like purple and gold. Our rustic line uses walnut, redwood, rosewood, ebony and burgundy wood tones. There's also a Michigan blue and yellow set and a bright rainbow stripe. If you want something else, ask us. We're a family shop and custom colors are part of the fun.

How to hang them

Customers have mounted their shelves in several ways. Sticky tabs work well in dorms and rentals where you can't drill, and one customer mounted large shelves in a bearded dragon's enclosure with magnets. Whatever you use, make sure it's rated for what you plan to put on the shelf, and keep heavier items on the larger ledges.
