The story behind the piece

Mushroom Shelves That Glow in the Dark

Real forests have mushrooms that glow. Charge these little shelves in the sun or under a black light, then turn off the lamp.

Deep in the woods on a warm, damp night, some rotting logs give off a faint, ghostly green light. Old-timers called it foxfire, and for centuries it spooked travelers and inspired legends. The light comes from bioluminescent fungi, and scientists have found more than a hundred species that glow, including the jack-o'-lantern mushroom, whose gills can shine in the dark.

Our shelves can't grow, but they can glow.

How the glow works

These are our classic oyster mushroom shelves, printed in a special glow-in-the-dark material. By day they're a cheerful orange. To charge them, give them light: sunlight works, and so does any UV light. We bought an inexpensive black light to charge ours, and it worked really well. Then turn off the lamp and the mushrooms glow back at you.

Real glowing fungi make their own light with a chemical reaction. Ours store light and slowly release it, a process called phosphorescence. Same magic, different science. How long the glow lasts depends on how strong the charge was, and we're still running our own experiments to find out.

Black light sold separately.

Built like the classics

Each set includes three shelves of varying heights, every one 3.75 inches across and about 1.5 inches deep. That's the same size as our bestselling sets, ready for crystals, tiny figurines or a small plant.

Where to let them glow

  • Kids' rooms, as a gentle, magical alternative to a nightlight
  • Reading nooks and game rooms, especially under black lights
  • Halloween decor that you don't have to pack away in November
  • Dorm rooms, where a black light is practically required

Mix day and night

Hang a glowing set beside one of our classic color sets, and your wall changes after sundown.
