The story behind the piece

The Morel You Never Have to Hunt For

Michigan's most-hunted mushroom, printed ridge by ridge in wood tones. It never wilts, and nobody has to give up their secret spot.

Every spring, a quiet frenzy sweeps through the Michigan woods. For a few short weeks in April and May, people who are perfectly reasonable the rest of the year start walking slowly through the woods, eyes on the ground, refusing to tell even their closest friends where they're going. They are hunting morels, and the good spots are guarded like family silver.

We hunt mushrooms too, and that's where this little figurine began.

Why everyone wants a morel

The morel is unmistakable: a tall, honeycombed cap of ridges and pits that looks more like a sea sponge than something that grew from the forest floor. It is famously delicious, famously fleeting and notoriously fussy to grow on purpose, which is why most morels still come from someone's secret patch. Boyne City, up north, even throws a National Morel Mushroom Festival every May.

A hunter's tip worth knowing: a true morel is hollow from the tip of the cap to the bottom of the stem. Look-alikes called false morels are not. Never eat a wild mushroom you can't identify with complete certainty.

The morel that stays perfect all year

Our version skips the mud and the guesswork. Each one is 3D printed in wood-toned plastic, layer by layer, so the ridges and pits come out crisp and deep. The classic stands 3½" tall and about 1¼" across, and the family has grown in both directions:

  • Tiny morels, about 1" to 1.5", for terrariums and miniature scenes
  • Mid sizes around 2.5"
  • Statement pieces at 6" and 7.5" for a shelf or mantel
  • Walnut, redwood and black walnut tones, with hooks for hanging on request

Where a morel looks best

Tuck one into a potted plant and watch guests do a double take. Hide a few in the flower bed for the grandkids to "find." Group three sizes on a windowsill, or let one stand guard in a terrarium. For a full woodland scene, pair it with our fairy garden stump, where printed morels sprout around a log covered in oyster mushrooms.

The easiest gift for the forager in your life

If someone you love disappears into the woods every May, this is their gift. It's a favorite in our gifts for dad, it costs less than a coffee in the small sizes, and it's the only morel they'll never have to share. Mushroom lovers can also wear one: the same morel, shrunk into a pendant with matching earrings.
