The story behind the piece

Shrek Is Love, Shrek Is Gold

An ogre who won the first Oscar for animated features deserves a proper bust. Choose the gold-brushed statue or the hand-painted swamp-green version.

In 2002 the Academy Awards handed out an Oscar for Best Animated Feature for the very first time. The winner wasn't a princess or a talking toy. It was a grumpy green ogre who just wanted his swamp back.

From picture book to pop icon

Shrek! started as a 1990 children's picture book by William Steig, the cartoonist behind decades of New Yorker drawings. The 2001 film turned Steig's lumpy, cheerfully disgusting ogre into one of the most quoted characters in animation, thanks to a fairy-tale satire, Eddie Murphy's Donkey and a soundtrack that made "All Star" unavoidable. Twenty-five years later, Shrek lives on in sequels, a Broadway musical and an internet that still insists that Shrek is love and Shrek is life.

Two ways to bring home the ogre

The gold bust stands nearly seven inches tall. We print it in durable black plastic, then brush it lightly with Inka Gold, a metallic finishing paste, so the gold catches the high points and the black stays in the creases. The result looks like a statue from a very strange museum, and we mean that as a compliment.

The hand-painted bust stands nearly five inches tall and is hand-painted in vibrant full color, so that famous green face really pops. It's sized for a desk, a bookshelf or the dashboard of a very committed fan.

Who needs a Shrek bust?

More people than you'd think:

  • The friend who quotes the movie in every group chat
  • Millennials who grew up on the movies on DVD and VHS
  • Father's Day for the dad who does the voice
  • White elephant exchanges, where it wins every time
  • Anyone whose decor could use some swamp

Keep the collection weird

Every great shelf of oddities needs a companion. Our gold Napoleon bust brings the same brushed-metal look to a figure with a very different reputation.
