The story behind the piece
Give Your Sneakers Wings
The Greek messenger god Hermes wore winged sandals. You can get the same effect on your sneakers in about thirty seconds.
In Greek mythology, Hermes, the fastest of the gods, carried messages between Olympus and Earth wearing a pair of winged sandals. The Romans called him Mercury, and the winged-foot symbol has been used for speed ever since, from flower-delivery logos to tire companies. We figured it was time everyone else got a pair.
Pick your wings
Butterfly wings come in two looks:
- Dual-toned red and green, bright and playful
- Translucent red, which glows like stained glass when the sun hits it
Bat wings come in sleek black for the gothic, spooky-season and "everything I own is black" crowd.
Thirty-second install
There are no tools and no glue. Just thread your shoelaces through the slots in each wing and tie your shoes like normal. The wings are designed to fit most standard shoelaces, and they're printed to be light but sturdy, so you'll forget they're there until someone compliments them.
Where they shine
- Sneakers and high-tops, the classic look
- Combat boots and Docs, where black bat wings look great
- Kids' shoes, which suddenly become magical shoes
- Halloween and cosplay, from fairies and Hermes to vampires and bat costumes
- Running groups and race day, as a nod to the original winged runner
Gift-ready and pocket-priced
At $8.40 a pair, they're an easy add-on gift for the teen who customizes everything, a stocking stuffer, or a small surprise for the friend who's getting married in sneakers. Buy one butterfly pair and one bat pair, and you're covered for every mood.
