The story behind the piece

Ph'nglui Mglw'nafh: Cthulhu Stickers for Your Car

An ancient god sleeps beneath the Pacific, waiting. Until he wakes, he can ride on your back window.

In February 1928, a pulp magazine called Weird Tales published a short story by a little-known writer from Providence, Rhode Island. It described a sunken city in the South Pacific, a cult that spanned the globe, and a vast, tentacled god dreaming beneath the waves. The writer was H. P. Lovecraft, the story was "The Call of Cthulhu," and horror has never been quite the same.

The monster that took over pop culture

Lovecraft's monster is part octopus, part dragon and part man, and it's so vast and old that seeing it can drive a person mad. The story didn't make him famous while he lived, but Cthulhu outlived its creator. It inspired generations of writers, board games, video games, films and an entire genre now called cosmic horror. "The Call of Cthulhu" even entered the U.S. public domain in 2024, nearly a century after it was first printed.

Fans still trade the cult's chant from the story, Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn, which roughly means "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."
