The story behind the piece

The Meditating Homer: Enlightenment, With Donuts

Perfect calm, a tray of donuts and a cold one. This parody statue mashes up the laughing Buddha and the most famous dad in TV history.

For centuries, statues of a jolly, round-bellied monk have sat in shops, restaurants and homes across Asia. He's Budai, often called the laughing Buddha in the West, and in folk tradition he stands for contentment, generosity and good fortune. Rubbing his belly is said to bring luck.

Now picture that same sense of total contentment, but replace the monk with Homer Simpson.

A very Springfield kind of enlightenment

The Simpsons premiered as a series in December 1989 and became the longest-running scripted primetime show in American TV history. Through all those years, Homer has been the most relatable of cartoon dads: lazy, loving and powered by beer and donuts. This statue gives him the peace he's always been looking for.

In our version Homer sits in blissful meditation, robe draped over his belly, with his beer in one hand and a tray of donuts in the other. Look closely and you'll find the funny details, including his toes and his belly button.

Why it works so well

The joke lands for everyone. Fans of the show get the reference right away, and anyone who knows the laughing-Buddha statues gets the parody. It's sacred-meets-silly in the best way, and it's equally at home on:

  • A desk, as a reminder to take a breath, and maybe a donut
  • A bar cart or man cave shelf
  • A dorm room, the natural habitat of Simpsons fans
  • A yoga room, for people with a sense of humor

Father's Day, sorted

It's one of our most popular picks in gifts for dad, especially for dads who quote the show and nap on the couch on Sundays.
