The story behind the piece

Granny Square Hats: A Classic, Remixed One Square at a Time

The granny square has been around for well over a century, and no two of ours are alike. These cozy hats come in every size from newborn to adult.

Few crochet patterns are as instantly recognizable as the granny square: rounds of little clusters, worked from the center out into a colorful square. Patterns for it go back to the 1800s, and generations of grandmothers stitched them from leftover yarn so nothing went to waste. In the 1960s and '70s it was everywhere, on afghans, vests and bags. Today it's back again, on runways and all over social media.

Our granny square hats take that classic and give it a twist.

No two hats alike

Each hat is pieced together from individual granny squares, and each square is a little different in color and character, so every hat is one of a kind. They're made from soft acrylic yarn, which is warm and easy to care for, and built for a Michigan cold season.

Sizes for the whole family

  • Baby: 5.5"
  • Child: 6.75"
  • Small adult: 8.75"
  • Medium adult: 11.5"
  • Large adult: 12.75"

Pick your colorway

  • Goldenrod, teal, brown and off-white: our favorite. There's a matching bag (about 18") too, but there's only one, so ask quickly
  • Christmas red, green and white, in child size, ready for holiday photos and sledding
  • Soft yellow and white for baby, made with baby yarn, a sweet shower gift for a boy or a girl. It also fits American Girl-size dolls when baby grows out of it
  • Plus purple, black speckle, grey and blue, black and grey, and orange in other sizes

Why we love making them

Granny squares are a little like scrapbooking with yarn. Each square is its own small project, and the fun is in how they come together. When you wear one of these, you're wearing dozens of small decisions about color, and a craft that's been passed down through generations.
