Handmade Crochet: Hats, Baby Gifts, Pet Sweaters and More

One hook, one strand of yarn, and thousands of loops. Here's the story of crochet and everything we make with it, from preemie cardigans to guinea pig vests.

Crochet needs remarkably little: a single hook and a strand of yarn. The word comes from the French crochet, meaning "small hook." There's no loom and no second needle, just loop after loop pulled through each other, and from that comes everything from lace to blankets.

A craft that carried families

Crochet took off in Europe in the 1800s, and one chapter of its history is unforgettable. During Ireland's Great Famine in the 1840s, women and girls crocheted intricate Irish crochet lace and sold it abroad. For many families, that lace was a lifeline that kept food on the table. Crochet has always been more than a hobby. It's been income, warmth and a way of caring for people with your hands.

Who makes ours

Our crochet is made by hand by Cat, our family's crochet artist (and jewelry designer). Every piece is stitched one at a time, so colors and textures vary a little from piece to piece. That's part of what makes them handmade.

Caring for crochet

Most of our pieces are made with acrylic or cotton-blend yarns. Wash them gently in cold water, on the delicate cycle or by hand, and lay them flat to dry so they keep their shape. Skip the dryer for anything you want to stay soft and the right size.

Made to order

If something is sold out, we can usually crochet another, and we're happy to try a custom color. Send us a note with what you have in mind.
